The Monaco Radio Symphony Orchestra (Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo) is a classical music ensemble based in the Principality of Monaco. Founded in 1856, the orchestra has a rich history of performances and has become one of the most renowned orchestras in Europe. The orchestra was founded by Prince Charles III of Monaco, who was a great lover of music and wanted to establish a permanent orchestra in the principality. The first conductor of the orchestra was Auguste Marius, who led the ensemble for over 20 years. The orchestra initially performed in the Salle Garnier, which was the only concert hall in Monaco at the time. Over the years, the orchestra has had many notable conductors, including Paul Paray, Igor Markevitch, and Lawrence Foster. Foster served as the music director of the orchestra from 2000 to 2019 and was instrumental in bringing the orchestra to new heights of excellence. The Monaco Radio Symphony Orchestra is made up of over 80 musicians, many of whom are from France and Italy. The orchestra performs a wide range of classical music, from Baroque to contemporary, and has collaborated with many renowned soloists and conductors. One of the highlights of the orchestra's history was its performance at the opening ceremony of the 1974 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria. The orchestra played the Olympic Hymn, which was composed by Spyridon Samaras and written by Kostis Palamas. The orchestra has also won many awards and accolades over the years. In 2015, the orchestra was awarded the prestigious Victoire de la Musique Classique award for Best Orchestral Performance for its recording of the music of Maurice Ravel. The orchestra has also been nominated for several Grammy Awards for its recordings. In addition to its regular performances in Monaco, the orchestra has toured extensively throughout Europe and Asia. The orchestra has performed in many of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Musikverein in Vienna, and the Suntory Hall in Tokyo. The Monaco Radio Symphony Orchestra has also been involved in many charitable and educational initiatives. The orchestra has worked with the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation to raise awareness about environmental issues and has also collaborated with local schools to provide music education to young people in the principality. In recent years, the orchestra has continued to thrive under the leadership of its current music director, Kazuki Yamada. Yamada, who is from Japan, has brought a fresh perspective to the orchestra and has worked to expand its repertoire and reach new audiences. Overall, the Monaco Radio Symphony Orchestra is a world-class ensemble with a rich history and a bright future. Its commitment to excellence, innovation, and community engagement has made it a beloved institution in Monaco and beyond.
