Trio Accanto is a contemporary classical music ensemble that was founded in 1994 by three renowned musicians: Marcus Weiss (saxophone), Nicolas Hodges (piano), and Christian Dierstein (percussion). The ensemble is known for its innovative and experimental approach to music-making, and has gained international recognition for its unique sound and repertoire. The three members of Trio Accanto first met while studying at the Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg, Germany. They quickly discovered a shared passion for contemporary music and began performing together as a trio. Since then, Trio Accanto has become one of the most respected ensembles in the contemporary classical music scene. The trio has commissioned and premiered numerous works by composers such as Rebecca Saunders, Michael Finnissy, and Georges Aperghis, among others. They have also collaborated with many other musicians and ensembles, including the Arditti Quartet, Ensemble Modern, and Klangforum Wien. One of the highlights of Trio Accanto's career was their performance at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival in 2005. The trio performed a program of works by composers such as Ferneyhough, Lachenmann, and Saunders, which was met with critical acclaim. The Guardian described the performance as "a stunning display of virtuosity and musical intelligence." Trio Accanto has also been recognized for their recordings. Their album "Accanto" was released in 2001 and features works by Ferneyhough, Lachenmann, and Salvatore Sciarrino. The album was awarded the German Record Critics' Award and was praised for its "exquisite musicianship and technical precision." In addition to their performances and recordings, Trio Accanto is also committed to education and outreach. The trio has conducted masterclasses and workshops at universities and music schools around the world, and has worked with young composers to develop new works for the ensemble.
