She was the daughter of Italian immigrants and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. Her father was a musician and her mother was a singer, and they encouraged Maria to pursue her love for music from a young age. Maria began her music education at the age of six, when she started taking piano lessons. She quickly showed a natural talent for music and was soon performing at local events and competitions. At the age of 14, she won a scholarship to study at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where she focused on piano and voice. After completing her studies, Maria began performing professionally as a classical pianist and singer. She quickly gained a reputation for her exceptional talent and was soon performing at major venues across Australia. In 1957, she made her debut at the Sydney Opera House, where she performed as a soloist with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Over the course of her career, Maria performed with many of the world's leading orchestras and conductors. She was particularly renowned for her interpretations of the works of Mozart, Beethoven, and Chopin, and was known for her technical skill and emotional depth. One of the highlights of Maria's career was her performance at the 1960 Edinburgh International Festival. She was the first Australian musician to be invited to perform at the festival, and her performance was met with critical acclaim. She went on to perform at many other international festivals, including the Salzburg Festival and the BBC Proms. Maria was also a prolific recording artist, and she released many albums throughout her career. Her recordings of Mozart's piano concertos and Beethoven's sonatas are particularly highly regarded, and are still considered to be some of the best recordings of these works. In addition to her performing and recording career, Maria was also a dedicated music educator. She taught at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music for many years, and was known for her passionate and inspiring teaching style. Many of her students went on to have successful careers in music, and she was widely respected as a mentor and role model. Throughout her career, Maria received many awards and honors for her contributions to classical music. She was awarded the Order of Australia in 1985 for her services to music, and was also awarded the Australian Music Centre's Distinguished Services to Australian Music Award in 2003. Maria continued to perform and teach until her retirement in the early 2000s. She passed away on October 24, 2020, at the age of 87.
