John Walz is a renowned cellist and classical music artist who has made a significant contribution to the world of music. Born on December 1, 1954, in Los Angeles, California, Walz grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Walz was exposed to classical music and began playing the cello at the age of six. Walz's talent was evident from an early age, and he quickly became a prodigy. He studied under the tutelage of Eleonore Schoenfeld at the University of Southern California and later went on to study with the legendary cellist, Gregor Piatigorsky. Walz's training under Piatigorsky was a turning point in his career, and he credits the master cellist for shaping his musical style and approach. In 1978, Walz made his debut as a soloist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, performing the Dvorak Cello Concerto. This performance was a major milestone in his career and marked the beginning of his journey as a soloist. Over the years, Walz has performed with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. In addition to his solo performances, Walz is also a sought-after chamber musician. He has collaborated with some of the world's most renowned musicians, including pianist Andre Watts, violinist Itzhak Perlman, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Walz is a founding member of the Los Angeles Piano Quartet and has performed with the group for over 30 years. Walz's talent and dedication to his craft have earned him numerous accolades and awards throughout his career. In 1981, he was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which recognizes outstanding young musicians. He has also been awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for his recordings of the Bach Cello Suites and the Brahms Double Concerto. One of Walz's most memorable performances was his rendition of the Elgar Cello Concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1994. The performance was recorded and released on CD, and it received critical acclaim. The Guardian described Walz's performance as "a deeply felt and beautifully played account of the Elgar Concerto." He is also a passionate educator and has taught at several prestigious institutions, including the University of Southern California and the Colburn School. He is currently a faculty member at the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California.
