Artist Info
Karim Shehata is a renowned classical music artist who has made a name for himself as a virtuoso double bass player. Born in Cairo, Egypt in 1983, Shehata grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from a young age. His father was a professional violinist, and his mother was a pianist, so it was only natural that Shehata would develop a love for music. Shehata began his musical education at the age of six, studying the piano with his mother. However, it wasn't until he was 12 years old that he discovered his true passion for the double bass. He was introduced to the instrument by his father, who had purchased a double bass for a recording session. Shehata was immediately drawn to the instrument's deep, rich sound and began studying it with his father. At the age of 16, Shehata was accepted into the Cairo Conservatory, where he studied with renowned double bassist Mohamed Abdel Aziz. He quickly distinguished himself as a talented musician and was awarded a scholarship to study at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hannover, Germany. In Germany, Shehata studied with double bass virtuoso Božo Paradžik, who became his mentor and had a profound influence on his musical development. Shehata also had the opportunity to study with other renowned musicians, including cellist David Geringas and conductor Eiji Oue. Shehata's talent and hard work paid off, and he began to receive recognition for his musical abilities. In 2006, he won first prize at the International Society of Bassists Solo Competition, which is considered one of the most prestigious competitions for double bass players. This win helped to launch his career and led to numerous performance opportunities. Since then, Shehata has performed as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. He has also collaborated with some of the most renowned conductors, including Daniel Barenboim, Zubin Mehta, and Simon Rattle. One of Shehata's most memorable performances was his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic in 2010. He performed the double bass concerto by Giovanni Bottesini, which is considered one of the most challenging pieces in the double bass repertoire. Shehata's performance was met with critical acclaim, and he was praised for his technical skill and musicality. In addition to his performances as a soloist, Shehata is also an active chamber musician. He has performed with many of the world's leading chamber ensembles, including the Emerson String Quartet and the Guarneri Quartet. He is also a member of the Berlin Philharmonic's Scharoun Ensemble, which is a chamber group made up of members of the orchestra. Shehata's musical achievements have not gone unnoticed, and he has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In addition to his win at the International Society of Bassists Solo Competition, he has also been awarded the Prix Thierry Scherz, which is given to outstanding young musicians in Switzerland. He was also named a BBC New Generation Artist in 2011, which is a prestigious award given to young musicians who show exceptional talent and promise. Despite his success, Shehata remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He continues to practice and study diligently, always striving to improve his technique and musicality. He is also passionate about teaching and has given masterclasses and workshops around the world.More....
