Nathan East is a renowned American bassist, singer, and songwriter who has made a significant contribution to the world of music. Born on December 8, 1955, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Nathan grew up in San Diego, California, where he began his musical journey at a young age. Nathan's father, Thomas East, was a well-known music teacher and conductor, and his mother, Gwendolyn, was a church pianist. Growing up in a musical family, Nathan was exposed to various genres of music, including classical, jazz, and gospel. He started playing the cello at the age of 14 and later switched to the bass guitar. In the early 1970s, Nathan formed a band called Power, which played at local clubs and events. He also played with other local bands, including the New Breed and the Love Machine. In 1978, Nathan joined the jazz fusion band Fourplay, which included Bob James, Lee Ritenour, and Harvey Mason. The band released their self-titled debut album in 1991, which became a huge success and earned them a Grammy nomination. Nathan's career took off in the 1980s when he started working as a session musician. He played bass on numerous hit songs, including "Easy Lover" by Phil Collins and Philip Bailey, "Footloose" by Kenny Loggins, and "I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston. He also worked with other notable artists such as Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Michael Jackson, and Stevie Wonder. In 2014, Nathan released his first solo album, titled "Nathan East," which featured collaborations with Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, and Stevie Wonder. The album received critical acclaim and earned Nathan his first Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album. Nathan has also been a member of the house band for the television show "Late Night with David Letterman" and its successor, "The Late Show with David Letterman." He has performed with the show's musical guests and has been featured in numerous skits and segments. In addition to his music career, Nathan is also a philanthropist and has been involved in various charitable organizations. He is a co-founder of the Daughters of Life Foundation, which provides education and healthcare to girls in Africa.
