Duo Sutre-Kim is a classical music ensemble consisting of two highly accomplished musicians, violinist Guillaume Sutre and pianist Kyung-Ae Kim. The duo has gained international recognition for their exceptional performances and recordings of classical music repertoire. Guillaume Sutre was born in France and began playing the violin at the age of five. He studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris and later at the Juilliard School in New York. Sutre has performed as a soloist with numerous orchestras around the world, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also served as the concertmaster of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and the Aspen Music Festival. Kyung-Ae Kim was born in South Korea and began playing the piano at the age of four. She studied at the Seoul National University and later at the Juilliard School. Kim has won numerous awards and competitions, including the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition and the International Tchaikovsky Competition. She has performed as a soloist with many major orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. Duo Sutre-Kim was founded in 2005, when Sutre and Kim met while teaching at the Aspen Music Festival. They quickly discovered a shared passion for chamber music and began performing together. The duo has since performed at many prestigious venues around the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Berlin Philharmonic Hall. One of the highlights of Duo Sutre-Kim's career was their performance at the 2010 Seoul Spring Festival of Chamber Music. The duo performed a program of works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Ravel to critical acclaim. The Korea Times praised their "exquisite musicianship" and "perfectly synchronized playing." In 2012, Duo Sutre-Kim released their debut album, featuring works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Franck. The album received widespread critical acclaim, with Gramophone magazine praising the duo's "impeccable technique and musicality." The duo has since released several more albums, including a recording of works by Debussy and Ravel that was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2018. Duo Sutre-Kim has also been recognized for their commitment to education and outreach. They have conducted masterclasses and workshops at many universities and music schools around the world, including the Juilliard School, the Royal Academy of Music in London, and the Seoul National University. The duo has also worked with young musicians through the Aspen Music Festival and the Music Academy of the West. In addition to their performances and recordings, Duo Sutre-Kim has received numerous awards and honors. They were awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2006, which recognizes outstanding young musicians. The duo has also been named Artists-in-Residence at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where they have performed and taught since 2013.
