Early Life and Education Alicja Smietana was born in Poland in 1978. She grew up in a family of musicians, with both her parents being professional violinists. Smietana showed an early interest in music, and began playing the violin at the age of four. She quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument, and her parents encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Smietana went on to study at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw, where she received her Bachelor of Music degree. She then went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she received her Master of Music degree. One of Smietana’s most notable performances was her debut with the London Symphony Orchestra in 2002.
