Hesterberg's breakthrough came in 1920 when she was invited to perform at the famous Berlin cabaret, Schall und Rauch. In 1923, Hesterberg formed her own cabaret troupe, which she called Die Trudchen. The troupe performed throughout Germany and became known for their satirical and political performances. In 1952, she was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, and in 1962, she was awarded the Goethe Medal.
