Born on September 22, 1941, in Little Rock, Arkansas, Buckner grew up in a family that valued music and the arts. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a singer, which exposed him to music at an early age. Buckner's interest in music grew as he got older, and he began studying voice and composition at the University of Illinois. He later moved to New York City, where he continued his studies at the Manhattan School of Music and the Juilliard School. During this time, Buckner became interested in contemporary music and began working with composers such as John Cage, Morton Feldman, and Christian Wolff. In the 1970s, Buckner became a founding member of the New York-based contemporary music ensemble, the SEM Ensemble. He also began performing as a soloist, specializing in contemporary vocal music. Throughout his career, Buckner has collaborated with numerous composers, including Robert Ashley, Alvin Lucier, and Annea Lockwood.
