He was born into a family of musicians, and his father was a well-known violinist and conductor. Janos began playing the violin at a young age and showed great promise as a musician. Janos received his early musical education at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, where he studied under the renowned violinist and pedagogue, Zoltan Szekely. He later continued his studies in Vienna with the legendary violinist, Nathan Milstein. In 1961, Janos won first prize at the International Violin Competition in Geneva, Switzerland, which launched his career as a soloist. He went on to perform with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. Janos was known for his virtuosic playing and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he performed. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. In addition to his career as a soloist, Janos was also a respected conductor. He served as the music director of the Hungarian State Orchestra from 1977 to 1982 and was the principal conductor of the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra from 1983 to 1991. Throughout his career, Janos received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1973, he was awarded the Kossuth Prize, Hungary's highest cultural honor. He was also a recipient of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary and the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. One of the highlights of Janos's career was his performance of Beethoven's Violin Concerto with the Berlin Philharmonic under the baton of Herbert von Karajan in 1977. The performance was widely acclaimed, and Janos's interpretation of the concerto was praised for its sensitivity and depth. Another notable performance was Janos's rendition of Bach's Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin, which he recorded in 1982. The recording was highly regarded and is considered one of the definitive interpretations of the works. Janos continued to perform and record throughout his career, and he remained an active musician until his death in 2018 at the age of 78.
