The Van Swieten Society is a classical music ensemble based in the Netherlands. Founded in 2006, the group is named after Gottfried van Swieten, an 18th-century Austrian diplomat and patron of the arts who was a close friend of Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven. The founding members of the Van Swieten Society were violinist and artistic director Johannes Leertouwer, cellist Lucia Swarts, and harpsichordist and pianist Bart van Oort. The group's mission is to perform music from the classical and early Romantic periods on period instruments, with a focus on the works of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven. Since its founding, the Van Swieten Society has become one of the leading ensembles in the Netherlands, known for its innovative programming and high-quality performances. The Van Swieten Society has received numerous awards and accolades for its performances and recordings. In 2012, the group won the prestigious Dutch Classical Music Award, which is given annually to the best classical music ensemble in the Netherlands. The group has also been praised for its recordings of Haydn's string quartets, which have been released on the Challenge Classics label.
