Born on August 22, 1954, in New York City, Parloff grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Parloff started playing the flute at the age of nine and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Parloff's early musical education was under the tutelage of Julius Baker, the principal flutist of the New York Philharmonic. He later studied at the Juilliard School, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree. Parloff continued his studies at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he studied with the legendary flutist Marcel Moyse. In 1977, Parloff joined the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra as its principal flutist, a position he held for 15 years. During his tenure at the Met, Parloff performed in numerous productions, including Wagner's "Ring Cycle" and Verdi's "Otello." He also appeared as a soloist with the orchestra, performing works by Mozart, Bach, and Vivaldi. In addition to his work with the Met, Parloff has performed with many other orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Philadelphia Orchestra. He has also been a guest artist at numerous music festivals, including the Marlboro Music Festival and the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. Parloff's talent as a flutist has earned him many accolades throughout his career. In 1982, he was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which recognizes outstanding young musicians. He has also been the music director of the New York Chamber Symphony and the New York Repertory Orchestra. Parloff's conducting career has also included work in the opera world.
