The Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra (TSSO) is a classical music ensemble based in Thessaloniki, Greece. Founded in 1949, the orchestra has become one of the most prominent cultural institutions in Greece, known for its high-quality performances and dedication to promoting classical music in the country. The TSSO was founded by a group of musicians who were passionate about classical music and wanted to create an orchestra that would showcase the talents of Greek musicians. The orchestra's first conductor was Andreas Paridis, who led the ensemble for over a decade and helped establish its reputation as one of the best orchestras in Greece. Over the years, the TSSO has had many talented musicians and conductors, including Nikos Christodoulou, who served as the orchestra's principal conductor from 1972 to 1991. Under Christodoulou's leadership, the TSSO became known for its innovative programming and collaborations with other artists and ensembles. One of the highlights of the TSSO's history was its performance at the opening ceremony of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. The orchestra played a piece by Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis, which was broadcast to millions of viewers around the world. The performance was a testament to the TSSO's reputation as one of the best orchestras in Greece and its commitment to promoting Greek culture on the world stage. In addition to its performances in Greece, the TSSO has also toured extensively throughout Europe and Asia. The orchestra has performed in some of the most prestigious concert halls in the world, including the Royal Albert Hall in London and the Musikverein in Vienna. The TSSO has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1999, the orchestra was awarded the prestigious UNESCO International Music Prize, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the development of music and the promotion of international understanding. The TSSO was the first Greek orchestra to receive this honor. In recent years, the TSSO has continued to thrive under the leadership of conductor Myron Michailidis. Michailidis, who has been the orchestra's principal conductor since 2011, has brought a fresh perspective to the ensemble and has helped to expand its repertoire and reach new audiences. Today, the TSSO remains one of the most important cultural institutions in Greece and a symbol of the country's rich musical heritage. With its talented musicians, innovative programming, and commitment to promoting classical music, the TSSO is sure to continue to inspire and delight audiences for many years to come.
