It was founded in 1868 as the Romanian Philharmonic Society, and was later renamed in honor of the renowned Romanian composer George Enescu. The ensemble has had many notable members throughout its history, including conductors George Georgescu, Constantin Silvestri, and Sergiu Celibidache, as well as soloists such as pianist Dinu Lipatti and violinist Ion Voicu. One of the ensemble's most significant performances was in 1955, when it premiered Enescu's opera "Oedipe" at the Paris Opera. The performance was a great success and helped to establish Enescu as a major composer on the international stage. The ensemble has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years, including the Order of Cultural Merit from the Romanian government and the Grand Prix du Disque from the French Academy of Music. In addition to its regular concert series in Bucharest, the George Enescu State Philharmonic has toured extensively throughout Europe and Asia, performing in major concert halls and festivals. Its repertoire includes a wide range of classical and contemporary works, with a particular emphasis on Romanian and Eastern European composers. Today, the George Enescu State Philharmonic continues to be one of Romania's most important cultural institutions, and a leading ambassador of Romanian classical music on the world stage.More....
