She was the daughter of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was deeply involved in music. Her father, August Teimar, was a well-known composer and conductor in Estonia, and her mother, Helmi Teimar, was a pianist. Margit Teimar showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. She was a prodigious talent and quickly became known for her exceptional musical abilities. She studied at the Tallinn Conservatory, where she received a rigorous education in music theory, composition, and performance. In 1944, Estonia was occupied by the Soviet Union, and Margit Teimar's family was forced to flee the country. They settled in Sweden, where Margit continued her musical studies at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. She studied under some of the most renowned musicians of the time, including pianist Gunnar Hallhagen and composer Karl-Birger Blomdahl. Margit Teimar made her debut as a concert pianist in 1948, performing with the Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. She went on to perform with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic.
