Hamilton Cheifetz is a renowned cellist and music educator who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born in New York City in 1946, Cheifetz grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to classical music from a young age. His father was a violinist and his mother was a pianist, and they encouraged him to pursue music as a career. Cheifetz began playing the cello at the age of nine and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He studied with several renowned cellists, including Leonard Rose and Bernard Greenhouse, and went on to earn a Bachelor of Music degree from the Juilliard School in 1968. After completing his studies, Cheifetz began performing with various orchestras and chamber ensembles. He was a member of the New York Philharmonic for several years before moving to Portland, Oregon in 1974 to join the Oregon Symphony as principal cellist. He held this position for 14 years and was widely regarded as one of the finest cellists in the Pacific Northwest. In addition to his work with the Oregon Symphony, Cheifetz was also a founding member of the Pacific Trio, a chamber ensemble that performed throughout the United States and Europe. He has received numerous awards and honors, including the Oregon Governor's Arts Award, the Portland Chamber Orchestra's Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Oregon Symphony's Golden Baton Award. In addition to his performing career, Cheifetz has also been a dedicated music educator. He has taught at several universities and conservatories, including the University of Oregon, Portland State University, and the University of Southern California. He has also been a frequent guest lecturer and masterclass instructor at music schools and festivals around the world.
