Werner Pilz is a renowned classical music artist who has made a significant contribution to the world of music. He was born on 12th May 1955 in Berlin, Germany. From a young age, Pilz showed a keen interest in music and began playing the clarinet at the age of 10. He was a natural talent and quickly progressed, winning several local competitions. Pilz continued his musical education at the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler" in Berlin, where he studied under the tutelage of Professor Karl-Heinz Steffens. He graduated with honors in 1979 and began his professional career as a clarinetist. Pilz's talent and dedication to his craft quickly caught the attention of the music world, and he was soon invited to perform with some of the most prestigious orchestras in Europe. In 1982, he was appointed as the principal clarinetist of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he held for over 20 years. During his time with the Berlin Philharmonic, Pilz performed under the baton of some of the most renowned conductors of the time, including Herbert von Karajan, Claudio Abbado, and Simon Rattle. He also collaborated with many of the world's leading soloists, including Yo-Yo Ma, Anne-Sophie Mutter, and Itzhak Perlman. Pilz's performances were always highly acclaimed, and he received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 1985, he was awarded the prestigious German Music Prize, and in 1992, he was awarded the Order of Merit of Berlin for his outstanding contribution to the city's cultural life. In addition to his work with the Berlin Philharmonic, Pilz was also a sought-after soloist and chamber musician. He performed regularly with the Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet and the Berlin Soloists, and he also made several recordings as a soloist. One of Pilz's most notable performances was his interpretation of Mozart's Clarinet Concerto in A major, which he performed with the Berlin Philharmonic under the baton of Herbert von Karajan. The performance was recorded and released on CD, and it remains one of the most highly regarded recordings of the piece. Pilz retired from the Berlin Philharmonic in 2003, but he continued to perform and teach. He was appointed as a professor of clarinet at the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler" in Berlin, where he had studied as a young man. He also taught at the University of the Arts in Berlin and at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, Austria. Throughout his career, Pilz remained dedicated to his craft and to the promotion of classical music. He was a passionate advocate for music education and worked tirelessly to inspire the next generation of musicians. Sadly, Werner Pilz passed away on 28th December 2019, at the age of 64. His legacy lives on through his recordings, his students, and the countless musicians he inspired throughout his career. He will always be remembered as one of the greatest clarinetists of his generation and a true ambassador for classical music.
