Horst Fiehl was a renowned classical music artist who made significant contributions to the world of music. He was born on August 12, 1922, in Berlin, Germany. Fiehl's parents were both musicians, and they encouraged him to pursue music from a young age. He began playing the piano at the age of six and showed exceptional talent. Fiehl's musical education began at the Berlin Conservatory, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist and composer, Walter Gieseking. He later continued his studies at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin, where he studied with Edwin Fischer. Fiehl's talent and dedication to music were evident from an early age, and he quickly became one of the most promising young musicians in Germany. In 1941, Fiehl was drafted into the German army and served as a soldier during World War II. During his time in the army, he continued to play the piano and even gave performances for his fellow soldiers. After the war, Fiehl returned to Berlin and resumed his studies at the Hochschule für Musik. Fiehl's career as a professional musician began in the late 1940s when he started performing in concerts and recitals throughout Germany. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented and versatile pianist, capable of playing a wide range of musical styles. Fiehl's performances were characterized by his technical precision, musical sensitivity, and emotional depth. In 1950, Fiehl won first prize at the International Piano Competition in Geneva, Switzerland. This was a significant achievement for Fiehl, as the competition was one of the most prestigious in the world. The win brought Fiehl international recognition and opened up new opportunities for him to perform in concerts and recitals around the world. Over the next few years, Fiehl continued to perform in concerts and recitals throughout Europe and the United States. He played with some of the most renowned orchestras in the world, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. Fiehl's performances were always well-received, and he quickly became one of the most sought-after pianists of his time. In addition to his performances, Fiehl was also a prolific recording artist. He recorded numerous albums throughout his career, including solo piano works, chamber music, and concertos. His recordings were highly acclaimed and received numerous awards and accolades. One of Fiehl's most significant achievements was his collaboration with the composer Paul Hindemith. Fiehl and Hindemith worked together on several projects, including the recording of Hindemith's complete piano works. Fiehl's performances of Hindemith's music were highly praised, and the recordings remain some of the most important interpretations of Hindemith's music. Fiehl's career continued to flourish throughout the 1960s and 1970s. He continued to perform in concerts and recitals around the world and recorded numerous albums. In 1972, Fiehl was awarded the Order of Merit of Berlin, one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a citizen of Berlin. Fiehl's career came to an end in 1983 when he suffered a stroke that left him partially paralyzed. Despite his illness, Fiehl continued to play the piano and even gave a few performances in the years following his stroke. He passed away on December 25, 1998, at the age of 76.
