Eduard van Regteren Altena was a Dutch classical music artist who was born on December 22, 1941, in Amsterdam, Netherlands. He was a renowned cellist, conductor, and music educator who made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Van Regteren Altena began his musical journey at a young age, studying cello at the Amsterdam Conservatory under the tutelage of renowned cellist Carel van Leeuwen Boomkamp. He later continued his studies in Paris with André Navarra and in London with William Pleeth. His talent and dedication to his craft were evident from an early age, and he quickly gained recognition as a rising star in the classical music world. In 1964, van Regteren Altena joined the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra as its principal cellist, a position he held for over a decade. During this time, he also performed as a soloist with various orchestras throughout Europe, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition to his work as a cellist, van Regteren Altena was also an accomplished conductor. He served as the principal conductor of the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra from 1976 to 1980 and later held the same position with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra from 1980 to 1985. He also conducted numerous other orchestras throughout Europe, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. Van Regteren Altena was also a dedicated music educator, serving as a professor of cello at the Amsterdam Conservatory from 1972 to 2006. He was known for his passionate and inspiring teaching style, and many of his students went on to have successful careers in the classical music world. Throughout his career, van Regteren Altena received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1972, he was awarded the Dutch Music Prize, the highest honor for a musician in the Netherlands. He was also awarded the Order of Orange-Nassau, a prestigious Dutch honor, in recognition of his contributions to the arts.
