David Freed was born on May 15, 1954, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a professional violinist and his mother a pianist. From a young age, Freed showed a natural talent for music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Freed's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking piano lessons with renowned pianist and teacher, Rosina Lhevinne, at the Juilliard School in New York City. Lhevinne recognized Freed's potential and became his mentor, guiding him through his musical education. Freed continued his studies at the Juilliard School, where he earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in piano performance. During his time at Juilliard, Freed studied with some of the most prominent pianists of the time, including Adele Marcus and Sascha Gorodnitzki. After completing his studies, Freed began his career as a concert pianist, performing in some of the most prestigious concert halls around the world. He quickly gained a reputation as a virtuoso pianist, known for his technical skill and musical sensitivity. One of Freed's most notable performances was his debut at Carnegie Hall in 1980. He performed a program of works by Beethoven, Chopin, and Liszt, receiving critical acclaim for his performance. This performance launched Freed's career and established him as one of the leading pianists of his generation. Throughout his career, Freed has performed with some of the world's most renowned orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He has also collaborated with many of the world's leading conductors, including Leonard Bernstein, Zubin Mehta, and Seiji Ozawa. In addition to his performances as a soloist, Freed is also an accomplished chamber musician. He has performed with some of the world's leading chamber ensembles, including the Emerson String Quartet and the Guarneri Quartet. Freed's repertoire is vast and includes works from all periods of classical music. He is particularly known for his interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Chopin, and Liszt. His recordings of these composers' works have received critical acclaim and have won numerous awards. Freed has also been recognized for his contributions to the world of classical music. He has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the Avery Fisher Career Grant, the Naumburg International Piano Competition, and the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. In addition to his performing career, Freed is also a dedicated teacher.
