Born on September 30, 1958, in Helsinki, Finland, Segerstam grew up in a family of musicians. Her father, Leif Segerstam, was a renowned composer and conductor, and her mother, Eeva-Liisa Saarinen, was a pianist. From a young age, Segerstam was exposed to classical music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Segerstam's musical talent was evident from an early age, and she began studying at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki at the age of 14. She studied piano with Liisa Pohjola and composition with Einojuhani Rautavaara. In 1978, she graduated with a degree in piano performance and continued her studies in composition and conducting. Segerstam's career as a conductor began in 1980 when she was appointed as the assistant conductor of the Finnish National Opera. She quickly gained recognition for her talent and was appointed as the principal conductor of the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra in 1988. She held this position until 1995 and during her tenure, she led the orchestra in numerous performances and recordings. In 1995, Segerstam was appointed as the principal conductor of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, a position she held until 2007. During her tenure, she led the orchestra in numerous performances and recordings, including a critically acclaimed recording of Sibelius's Kullervo Symphony. She also introduced new works by Finnish composers and collaborated with international soloists such as Maxim Vengerov and Anne-Sophie Mutter. Segerstam's career as a composer began in the 1980s, and she has since composed numerous works for orchestra, chamber ensembles, and solo instruments. Her compositions have been performed by orchestras and ensembles around the world, including the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Tapiola Sinfonietta.
