Joana Carneiro is a renowned classical music conductor who has made a name for herself in the music industry. Born in Lisbon, Portugal, on June 18, 1976, Carneiro grew up in a family of musicians. Her father was a composer and conductor, and her mother was a pianist. From a young age, Carneiro was exposed to classical music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Carneiro's passion for music continued to grow, and she went on to study at the National Conservatory of Lisbon. She later moved to the United States to attend the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance. She then went on to earn a Master of Music degree in conducting from the Manhattan School of Music in New York City. Carneiro's career as a conductor began in 2002 when she was appointed as the assistant conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. She quickly made a name for herself and was soon promoted to associate conductor. During her time with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Carneiro conducted numerous concerts and worked with some of the world's most renowned musicians. In 2009, Carneiro was appointed as the music director of the Berkeley Symphony in California. She held this position for nine years and during her tenure, she led the orchestra in numerous performances and recordings. She also worked to expand the orchestra's repertoire and collaborated with a variety of artists and composers. Carneiro has also conducted numerous other orchestras around the world, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, and the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra. She has also conducted at numerous music festivals, including the Tanglewood Music Festival, the Aspen Music Festival, and the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music. Throughout her career, Carneiro has received numerous awards and accolades for her work as a conductor. In 2009, she was named one of the "Top 40 Under 40" by the San Francisco Business Times. She has also been awarded the Helen M. Thompson Award by the American Symphony Orchestra League and the Taki Concordia Fellowship by the Taki Concordia Foundation. One of Carneiro's most notable performances was her debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2006. She conducted a program that included works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Stravinsky, and received rave reviews for her performance. The Los Angeles Times called her "a conductor of uncommon talent and intelligence." Another highlight of Carneiro's career was her performance with the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 2011. She conducted a program that included works by Ravel, Debussy, and Stravinsky, and received a standing ovation from the audience. The Guardian called her "a conductor of great promise."
