Born in 1961 in the United States, Fancher grew up in a family of musicians. Her father was a jazz pianist, and her mother was a singer. Fancher attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in saxophone performance. She then went on to pursue a Master of Music degree at Northwestern University, where she studied with renowned saxophonist Frederick Hemke.
