The choir was founded in 1946 in Stuttgart, Germany, by the Süddeutscher Rundfunk (SDR), which is now known as the Südwestrundfunk (SWR). The choir has since become one of the most respected and celebrated choirs in the world, with a rich history of outstanding performances and numerous awards. The Südfunk Chor was initially established as a radio choir, and its primary purpose was to perform on the radio. However, the choir quickly gained a reputation for its exceptional talent and began performing in concerts and festivals across Germany and Europe.
