Born on July 16, 1940, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Moreira-Lima began playing the piano at the age of six and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. As a child, Moreira-Lima studied with some of Brazil's most renowned piano teachers, including Magdalena Tagliaferro and Nise Obino. He also received a scholarship to study at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied with Rosina Lhévinne and won several awards for his performances. Moreira-Lima's career as a concert pianist began in the 1960s, when he began performing in Brazil and throughout South America. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented and exciting young pianists of his generation, and his performances were praised for their technical brilliance and emotional depth. In 1970, Moreira-Lima made his debut in the United States, performing at the Lincoln Center in New York City. The performance was a huge success, and Moreira-Lima was soon invited to perform at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Salle Pleyel in Paris. Throughout his career, Moreira-Lima has been known for his passionate interpretations of classical music, particularly the works of Brazilian composers such as Heitor Villa-Lobos and Claudio Santoro. He has also been a champion of lesser-known composers, performing works by composers such as Francisco Mignone and Camargo Guarnieri. In addition to his performances as a soloist, Moreira-Lima has also collaborated with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He has also recorded extensively, with over 40 albums to his name. Moreira-Lima's career has been marked by numerous awards and honors. In 1972, he was awarded the Medalha de Ouro da Cidade do Rio de Janeiro, the highest honor given by the city of Rio de Janeiro. He has also been awarded the Order of Cultural Merit by the Brazilian government and the Order of Rio Branco by the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1994, Moreira-Lima was awarded the Medalha Carlos Gomes, Brazil's highest honor for classical musicians. He has also been awarded the Medalha da Inconfidência by the state of Minas Gerais and the Medalha da Ordem do Mérito Cultural by the Brazilian Ministry of Culture. Despite his many accomplishments, Moreira-Lima remains committed to promoting classical music in Brazil and throughout the world. He has established several music schools in Brazil and has worked tirelessly to bring classical music to audiences who might not otherwise have access to it. Today, Moreira-Lima continues to perform and record, and his passion for classical music remains as strong as ever.
