Pépin's parents were both musicians, and they encouraged him to pursue music from a young age. He began playing the piano at the age of five and showed exceptional talent and dedication to the instrument. Pépin's musical education began at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Montréal, where he studied under the tutelage of Yvonne Hubert. He later continued his studies at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied with Rosina Lhévinne. Pépin's talent and hard work paid off, and he quickly gained recognition as a gifted pianist. In 1952, Pépin made his debut as a soloist with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3. The performance was a resounding success, and Pépin's career took off from there. He went on to perform with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic.
