Mabel Kwan is a highly accomplished classical music artist who has made a name for herself as a pianist, composer, and improviser. Born in Hong Kong, Kwan grew up in a family that valued music and the arts. Her parents were both amateur musicians, and they encouraged her to pursue her passion for music from a young age. Kwan began playing the piano when she was just four years old, and she quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. She studied with several renowned teachers in Hong Kong, including Nancy Loo and Gabriel Kwok, and she also attended the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. In 2000, Kwan moved to the United States to continue her musical education. She earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Michigan, where she studied with Logan Skelton and Arthur Greene. She then went on to earn a Master of Music degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she studied with William Heiles. Throughout her education, Kwan was recognized for her exceptional talent and dedication to music. She won numerous awards and scholarships, including the Presser Foundation Award, the University of Michigan Concerto Competition, and the University of Illinois Concerto Competition. After completing her formal education, Kwan began to establish herself as a professional musician. She has performed extensively throughout the United States and abroad, both as a soloist and as a chamber musician. She has appeared at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Chicago Cultural Center. Kwan is known for her versatility as a performer, and she has a particular interest in contemporary music. She has premiered numerous works by living composers, and she has collaborated with many of the leading figures in the contemporary classical music scene. In addition to her work as a performer, Kwan is also an accomplished composer and improviser. She has written numerous works for piano, as well as for other instruments and ensembles.
