Choral Arts Northwest is a classical music ensemble based in Seattle, Washington. The ensemble was founded in 1993 by its current artistic director, Robert Bode, who sought to create a professional-level choral group that would perform a diverse range of repertoire and engage with the community through educational outreach programs. The ensemble's core members are a group of highly skilled and experienced singers, many of whom have backgrounds in music education and performance. Choral Arts Northwest also frequently collaborates with instrumentalists and other artists to create unique and innovative performances. Over the years, Choral Arts Northwest has become known for its exceptional performances of both traditional and contemporary choral music. The ensemble has premiered numerous works by contemporary composers, including commissions by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Lang and Seattle-based composer John Muehleisen. One of the highlights of Choral Arts Northwest's history was its performance at the 2015 American Choral Directors Association National Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah. The ensemble was one of only six choirs selected to perform at the conference, which is considered one of the most prestigious events in the choral music world. Choral Arts Northwest has also received numerous awards and accolades for its performances and recordings. The ensemble's recording of David Lang's "The Little Match Girl Passion" won the 2010 Grammy Award for Best Small Ensemble Performance, and its recording of John Muehleisen's "But Who Shall Return Us Our Children?" was nominated for a Grammy in 2019. In addition to its performances, Choral Arts Northwest is committed to engaging with the community through educational outreach programs. The ensemble regularly works with local schools and community organizations to provide workshops and performances that promote choral music and music education.
