He grew up in a musical family, with his father being a church organist and his mother a pianist. Winteregg began playing the piano at a young age and later learned to play the trumpet and French horn. Winteregg attended the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in composition. He then went on to earn a Master of Music degree in composition from the University of Michigan. During his time at the University of Michigan, Winteregg studied with renowned composers William Bolcom and Leslie Bassett. After completing his studies, Winteregg began his career as a composer and educator. He taught at several universities, including Wright State University, where he served as the chair of the Department of Music. He also served as the composer-in-residence for the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra. Throughout his career, Winteregg composed a wide range of works, including orchestral pieces, chamber music, and vocal music. His compositions have been performed by numerous orchestras and ensembles, including the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Cleveland Orchestra. One of Winteregg's most notable works is his Symphony No. 2, which was commissioned by the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra and premiered in 1992.
