He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was deeply involved in music. From a young age, Philipp showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He was a prodigious talent and quickly developed a reputation as a gifted musician. Philipp's early musical education was under the tutelage of his father, who was a respected music teacher in Vienna. He received his formal training at the Vienna Academy of Music, where he studied under the renowned pianist and composer, Friedrich Gulda. Philipp's talent was evident from the start, and he quickly established himself as one of the most promising young musicians of his generation. In 1952, Philipp made his debut as a soloist with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, performing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21 in C Major. The performance was a resounding success, and Philipp was hailed as a rising star in the classical music world. He went on to perform with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. Philipp's repertoire was vast and included works by some of the greatest composers in history, including Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Mozart, and Schubert. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Mozart, and his recordings of Mozart's piano concertos are considered some of the finest ever made. In addition to his work as a soloist, Philipp was also a highly respected chamber musician. He frequently performed with other leading musicians, including the violinist Yehudi Menuhin and the cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. Together, they formed a trio that was widely regarded as one of the finest chamber ensembles of its time. Throughout his career, Philipp received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to the world of classical music. In 1962, he was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for his recording of Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23 in A Major. He was also awarded the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art in 1976 and the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1981. Despite his many achievements, Philipp remained humble and dedicated to his craft throughout his life.
