He was a prodigious talent and quickly developed his skills, impressing his family and teachers with his ability to play complex pieces with ease. Kaps received his formal music education at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist and teacher, Georg Sava. He graduated with honors in 1968 and went on to pursue a successful career as a concert pianist. Kaps made his debut performance in 1969 at the Berlin Philharmonic Hall, where he played Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5. The performance was a resounding success, and Kaps received critical acclaim for his virtuosity and musicality. He went on to perform at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Salle Pleyel in Paris.
