Gottfried Reiche was a German composer and trumpeter who lived from 1667 to 1734. He was born in Weißenfels, a town in the Electorate of Saxony, and began his musical career as a choirboy at the local church. He showed a talent for playing the trumpet and was eventually appointed as the town's official trumpeter in 1688. Reiche's career as a trumpeter was closely tied to the court of the Elector of Saxony in Dresden. He played in the court orchestra and was eventually appointed as the director of the town's Collegium Musicum, a group of musicians who performed in public concerts. Reiche was also responsible for training the town's trumpeters, and his reputation as a teacher was such that he was invited to give lessons to the trumpeters of other courts in Germany. Reiche's most famous composition is the Abblasen fanfare, which is still played today at many formal events. The piece is a short trumpet fanfare that was originally used to announce the arrival of important guests at court. Reiche also composed a number of other works for trumpet, including sonatas and concertos. In addition to his work as a composer and trumpeter, Reiche was also an important figure in the development of the natural trumpet. This instrument, which was used before the invention of the valve trumpet, had a limited range of notes and required a great deal of skill to play. Reiche was one of the first musicians to experiment with different techniques for playing the natural trumpet, and his innovations helped to expand the instrument's capabilities. Reiche's music is typical of the Baroque period, with its emphasis on elaborate ornamentation and complex harmonies. His trumpet works are particularly notable for their virtuosic passages and intricate counterpoint. Reiche was also known for his use of the "echo effect," in which a musical phrase is repeated by a second trumpet player in a different part of the room. Despite his many accomplishments, Reiche's life was not without its difficulties. He suffered from poor health throughout his career, and his financial situation was often precarious. In 1728, he was forced to sell his house in order to pay off debts. He died six years later, at the age of 67. Today, Reiche is remembered as one of the most important trumpet players and composers of the Baroque period.
