Camerata Nova is a classical music ensemble based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The group was founded in 1996 by Andrew Balfour, a composer and conductor of Cree descent. Balfour wanted to create a chamber choir that would explore the rich musical traditions of Manitoba and Canada, while also incorporating contemporary and experimental elements. The ensemble's name, Camerata Nova, is derived from the Italian word "camerata," which means "chamber music," and "nova," which means "new." This reflects the group's commitment to exploring new and innovative approaches to classical music. Camerata Nova's core members are a group of highly skilled vocalists who specialize in a wide range of musical styles, including classical, folk, and indigenous music. The group also collaborates with a variety of guest artists, including instrumentalists, dancers, and visual artists. Over the years, Camerata Nova has become known for its innovative and boundary-pushing performances. The group has premiered numerous new works by Canadian composers, including Andrew Balfour, T. Patrick Carrabré, and Jocelyn Morlock. They have also collaborated with a variety of indigenous artists, including throat singers, drummers, and dancers. One of Camerata Nova's most notable performances was their 2017 concert, "Kanata 150?" This concert was a response to Canada's 150th anniversary celebrations, which many indigenous people saw as a celebration of colonialism and oppression. "Kanata 150?" featured a variety of indigenous artists and explored themes of reconciliation, decolonization, and cultural resurgence. Camerata Nova has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2009, the group won the Western Canadian Music Award for "Classical Recording of the Year" for their album "Into Light." In 2017, they were awarded the Mayor's Award for Innovation in the Arts in recognition of their groundbreaking work. In addition to their performances, Camerata Nova is also committed to education and outreach.
