David Omar White was born on May 12, 1985, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his mother being a pianist and his father a cellist. From a young age, White showed a natural talent for music, and he began playing the piano at the age of four. White's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue music seriously. He began taking piano lessons with renowned pianist and teacher, Maria João Pires, at the age of six. Pires quickly recognized White's potential and became his mentor, guiding him through his musical education. White's talent continued to grow, and he began performing in public at the age of eight. He made his debut with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of ten, playing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor. The performance was a huge success, and White received critical acclaim for his virtuosic playing. Over the years, White continued to perform with major orchestras around the world, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Vienna Philharmonic. He also performed at major music festivals, such as the Salzburg Festival and the Edinburgh International Festival. White's repertoire was vast, and he was known for his interpretations of the works of Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, and Rachmaninoff. He was also a champion of contemporary music and premiered works by composers such as John Adams and Philip Glass. In addition to his performances, White was also a prolific recording artist. He recorded over 50 albums throughout his career, including complete cycles of the piano works of Beethoven and Chopin. White's talent and dedication to music were recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout his career. He was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2005, the Gilmore Artist Award in 2008, and the Kennedy Center Honors in 2014. Despite his success, White remained humble and dedicated to his craft. He was known for his intense focus and dedication to his music, often spending hours practicing and perfecting his performances. Tragically, White's life was cut short when he died in a car accident on June 15, 2017, at the age of 32.
