Carly Simon is an American singer-songwriter and composer who has made a significant contribution to the world of classical music. Born on June 25, 1945, in New York City, Simon grew up in a musical family. Her father, Richard Simon, was the co-founder of Simon & Schuster, a publishing company, and her mother, Andrea Heinemann Simon, was a singer and pianist. Simon began playing the piano at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. She attended the Riverdale Country School in the Bronx, where she was a member of the school choir and performed in school musicals. After graduating from high school, Simon attended Sarah Lawrence College, where she studied music and literature. In the late 1960s, Simon began performing in clubs in New York City's Greenwich Village. She was discovered by music producer Jac Holzman, who signed her to Elektra Records. Simon's debut album, "Carly Simon," was released in 1971 and included the hit single "That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be." The album was a critical and commercial success, and Simon was hailed as a new voice in the singer-songwriter genre. Simon's second album, "Anticipation," was released in 1971 and included the hit title track. The album was also a critical and commercial success and established Simon as a major force in the music industry. Simon's third album, "No Secrets," was released in 1972 and included the hit single "You're So Vain," which became one of the most famous songs of the 1970s. Throughout the 1970s, Simon continued to release successful albums and singles. Her fourth album, "Hotcakes," was released in 1974 and included the hit single "Mockingbird," a duet with her then-husband James Taylor. Simon's fifth album, "Playing Possum," was released in 1975 and included the hit single "Attitude Dancing." In addition to her work as a singer-songwriter, Simon also composed music for films and television. She wrote the theme song for the James Bond film "The Spy Who Loved Me" in 1977, which became a hit single. She also composed the score for the film "Heartburn" in 1986 and wrote the theme song for the television show "Working Girl" in 1990. Simon's music has been praised for its emotional depth and honesty. Her lyrics often explore themes of love, relationships, and self-discovery. Her music has also been noted for its use of complex harmonies and arrangements, which have been compared to those of classical composers. In 1995, Simon was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She has also won numerous awards throughout her career, including a Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1972 and an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score for the film "Working Girl" in 1989. Today, Simon continues to write and perform music. Her most recent album, "Touched by the Sun," was released in 2021 and features collaborations with a number of other musicians. Simon's legacy as a composer and performer continues to inspire new generations of musicians and fans.
