Jewel Kilcher, known professionally as Jewel, is an American singer-songwriter, guitarist, and actress. She was born on May 23, 1974, in Payson, Utah, to Atz Kilcher and Lenedra Carroll. Jewel's parents were both musicians, and she grew up in a musical family. Her father was a folk singer, and her mother was a singer-songwriter and artist. Jewel began singing at a young age and started playing the guitar when she was six years old. She grew up in Alaska, where her family lived off the land and had no electricity or running water. Despite the challenges of living in a remote area, Jewel's parents encouraged her musical talents and helped her develop her skills. In 1993, Jewel moved to San Diego, California, where she began performing in coffeehouses and clubs. She was discovered by Inga Vainshtein, a music executive who helped her secure a record deal with Atlantic Records. Jewel's debut album, "Pieces of You," was released in 1995 and became a massive commercial success. The album sold over 12 million copies in the United States alone and featured hit singles such as "Who Will Save Your Soul," "You Were Meant for Me," and "Foolish Games." Jewel's music is often classified as folk-pop, and her lyrics are known for their introspective and poetic nature. Her songs often deal with themes of love, loss, and self-discovery. Jewel's unique voice and guitar playing style have earned her critical acclaim and a loyal fan base. In addition to her music career, Jewel has also pursued acting. She has appeared in several films and television shows, including "Ride with the Devil," "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story," and "Alaska: The Last Frontier." Jewel has released several albums throughout her career, including "Spirit" (1998), "This Way" (2001), "0304" (2003), "Goodbye Alice in Wonderland" (2006), "Lullaby" (2009), "Sweet and Wild" (2010), "Picking Up the Pieces" (2015), and "A Very Merry Christmas" (2019). Her music has earned her numerous awards and nominations, including four Grammy nominations. One of Jewel's most notable works is her album "Lullaby," which was released in 2009. The album features lullabies that Jewel wrote for her son, Kase. The songs are gentle and soothing, and the album has been praised for its calming effect on both children and adults. Jewel has also collaborated with other musicians throughout her career. She has worked with artists such as Dolly Parton, Merle Haggard, and Kelly Clarkson. In 2013, Jewel released a collaborative album with country singer-songwriter, Ty Murray, called "Jewel and Ty: At the End of the Day." In addition to her music and acting career, Jewel is also an author. She has written several books, including a memoir called "Never Broken: Songs Are Only Half the Story" and a children's book called "That's What I'd Do." Jewel's music has had a significant impact on the world of folk-pop. Her introspective lyrics and unique voice have earned her a loyal fan base and critical acclaim. She continues to write and perform music, and her legacy as a singer-songwriter and guitarist is sure to endure for years to come.
