Born in 1954 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Stumpf began playing the piano at the age of five. He showed a natural talent for the instrument and quickly became a prodigy, performing his first public recital at the age of eight. Stumpf’s parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He studied with several renowned teachers, including Rosina Lhevinne, a Russian-born pianist who was known for her rigorous teaching methods. Under Lhevinne’s guidance, Stumpf developed a deep understanding of the technical and artistic aspects of piano playing. In 1972, Stumpf enrolled at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied with Adele Marcus. He graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1976 and went on to earn a Master of Music degree from the same institution in 1978. Stumpf’s career as a concert pianist began to take off in the late 1970s. He won several prestigious competitions, including the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition in 1978 and the William Kapell International Piano Competition in 1980. These victories brought him international recognition and led to performances with major orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. Stumpf’s performances were praised for their technical brilliance and emotional depth. He was known for his ability to bring out the nuances of a piece of music, highlighting its subtleties and complexities. His interpretations were often described as “thoughtful” and “profound.” In addition to his career as a performer, Stumpf has also been a dedicated teacher.
