He was a pianist, composer, and conductor who made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Civil was born into a family of musicians, and his father, Joaquín Nin-Culmell, was a composer and pianist. His mother, Rosa Culmell, was a singer, and his aunt, Anaïs Nin, was a writer. Civil began his musical training at a young age, and he showed great promise as a pianist. He studied with some of the best teachers in Cuba, including Joaquín Nin-Culmell, his father, and Harold Gramatges. Civil also studied composition with Amadeo Roldán, one of the most important Cuban composers of the 20th century. In 1935, Civil made his debut as a pianist with the Havana Symphony Orchestra, and he quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented young musicians in Cuba. He continued to perform as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the 1930s and 1940s, and he also began to compose his own music. Civil's music was heavily influenced by Cuban folk music and rhythms, and he was one of the first composers to incorporate these elements into classical music. His compositions were also influenced by the music of other Latin American countries, as well as by European classical music. In 1948, Civil moved to the United States to study at the Juilliard School in New York City. He continued to perform and compose while he was in the United States, and he also began to conduct orchestras. Civil's conducting career took off in the 1950s, and he conducted many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. Civil's conducting style was known for its energy and passion, and he was particularly skilled at conducting the music of Latin American composers. He was also a champion of contemporary music, and he conducted many premieres of new works by composers such as Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, and Samuel Barber. In addition to his conducting career, Civil continued to compose music throughout his life. He wrote music for orchestra, chamber ensembles, and solo instruments, and his music was performed by many of the world's leading musicians. Civil received many awards and honors throughout his career, including the Order of Cultural Merit from the Cuban government, the Order of Merit from the Chilean government, and the National Medal of Arts from the United States government. He was also inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1991. Civil died on November 12, 2015, at the age of 100.
