Ken Pullig is a renowned jazz pianist, composer, arranger, and educator who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born on August 14, 1944, in Waltham, Massachusetts, Pullig grew up in a musical family and started playing the piano at a young age. His father was a trumpet player, and his mother was a singer, which exposed him to a wide range of musical genres from an early age. Pullig's passion for music continued to grow, and he went on to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 1967. During his time at Berklee, Pullig studied with renowned jazz pianist and composer, Herb Pomeroy, who had a significant influence on his musical style and approach. After graduating from Berklee, Pullig began his career as a professional musician, performing with various jazz ensembles and big bands. He also worked as a composer and arranger, creating music for television and film, as well as for other musicians and ensembles. In 1973, Pullig joined the faculty at Berklee College of Music, where he taught jazz composition and arranging for over 40 years. During his tenure at Berklee, Pullig became a highly respected educator, known for his innovative teaching methods and his ability to inspire and motivate his students. In addition to his work as an educator, Pullig continued to perform and record as a jazz pianist and composer. He has released several albums, including "The Ken Pullig Trio" (1980), "The Ken Pullig Quartet" (1982), and "The Ken Pullig Big Band" (1990). Pullig's music has been featured in numerous performances and festivals around the world, including the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands, and the Monterey Jazz Festival in California. He has also performed with some of the biggest names in jazz, including Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, and Phil Woods. Throughout his career, Pullig has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the world of jazz and classical music. In 1995, he was awarded the Berklee College of Music's Distinguished Faculty Award, and in 2007, he was inducted into the Massachusetts Jazz Educators Hall of Fame. Pullig's legacy as a musician and educator continues to inspire and influence generations of musicians. His innovative approach to jazz composition and arranging, as well as his dedication to teaching and mentoring young musicians, has made him a true icon in the world of classical music.
