The ensemble was founded in 1989 by flutist Suzanne Stumpf, harpsichordist Michael Bahmann, and cellist Daniel Ryan. The group takes its name from the Old Post Road, a historic route that connected Boston and New York in the 18th century. The ensemble's core members include Stumpf, Bahmann, Ryan, and violinist Sarah Darling.
