Malvina Major is a renowned classical music artist from New Zealand. She was born on January 28, 1943, in Hamilton, New Zealand. Her parents were both musicians, and they encouraged her to pursue music from a young age. She began singing in church choirs and school productions, and her talent was quickly recognized. Major studied at the University of Auckland, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree. She then went on to study at the London Opera Centre, where she honed her skills as a soprano. She made her professional debut in 1967, performing in the New Zealand Opera Company's production of "The Marriage of Figaro." Major quickly established herself as one of New Zealand's most talented classical music artists. She performed in numerous productions with the New Zealand Opera Company, including "La Boheme," "Madama Butterfly," and "Carmen." She also performed with the Australian Opera and the English National Opera. In 1978, Major was awarded the Order of the British Empire for her services to music. She continued to perform throughout the 1980s and 1990s, both in New Zealand and internationally. She performed in productions of "The Magic Flute," "Don Giovanni," and "The Barber of Seville," among others. One of Major's most notable performances was her rendition of the New Zealand national anthem at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland. Her performance was widely praised, and it helped to cement her status as a national treasure. Major has also been involved in music education throughout her career. She has taught at the University of Auckland and the New Zealand School of Music, and she has served as a judge for numerous music competitions. In addition to her OBE, Major has received numerous other awards and honors throughout her career. She was awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit in 1991, and she was made a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2008. She has also been awarded honorary doctorates from the University of Waikato and the University of Auckland. Despite her many accomplishments, Major remains humble and dedicated to her craft. She continues to perform and teach, and she is widely regarded as one of New Zealand's greatest classical music artists. Her legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations of musicians for years to come.
