Founded in 1954 by Harry Begian, the ensemble has become one of the most respected wind bands in the world, known for its technical precision, musicality, and innovative programming. The ensemble is made up of approximately 60 undergraduate and graduate students from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, who are selected through a rigorous audition process. In addition to its performances at major conferences, the Wind Symphony has also won numerous awards and accolades for its recordings. The ensemble has released over 30 albums, many of which have been recognized with awards from organizations such as the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences and the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers. The Wind Symphony's commitment to innovative programming has also been a hallmark of its success. The ensemble has commissioned and premiered works by some of the most important composers of our time, including John Adams, Michael Daugherty, and Jennifer Higdon.
