The University of Illinois Wind Symphony is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with its exceptional performances for over 60 years. Founded in 1954 by Harry Begian, the ensemble has become one of the most respected wind bands in the world, known for its technical precision, musicality, and innovative programming. The ensemble is made up of approximately 60 undergraduate and graduate students from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, who are selected through a rigorous audition process. The members of the Wind Symphony are some of the most talented and dedicated musicians at the university, and many go on to successful careers in music after graduation. Under the direction of conductor Stephen Peterson, the Wind Symphony has earned a reputation for excellence through its performances at major music conferences, festivals, and competitions. The ensemble has been invited to perform at the Midwest Clinic, the College Band Directors National Association Conference, and the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles Conference, among others. One of the highlights of the Wind Symphony's history was its performance at the 1993 Midwest Clinic, where it premiered John Corigliano's "Circus Maximus" for wind ensemble and amplified sound. The piece, which was commissioned by the Wind Symphony, is a tour-de-force of virtuosity and musicality, and has since become a staple of the wind band repertoire. In addition to its performances at major conferences, the Wind Symphony has also won numerous awards and accolades for its recordings. The ensemble has released over 30 albums, many of which have been recognized with awards from organizations such as the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences and the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers. The Wind Symphony's commitment to innovative programming has also been a hallmark of its success. The ensemble has commissioned and premiered works by some of the most important composers of our time, including John Adams, Michael Daugherty, and Jennifer Higdon.
