Luigi Zaninelli was born on August 22, 1932, in New York City. He grew up in a musical family, with his father being a violinist and his mother a pianist. Zaninelli began playing the piano at a young age and later learned to play the violin and trumpet. He attended the High School of Music and Art in New York City and went on to study at the Manhattan School of Music, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in composition. After completing his studies, Zaninelli began his career as a composer and conductor. He served as the music director of the Westchester Choral Society from 1960 to 1970 and was the conductor of the New York State Summer School of the Arts from 1972 to 1975. He also taught at the Manhattan School of Music and the State University of New York at Purchase. Throughout his career, Zaninelli composed a wide range of works, including choral music, orchestral music, and chamber music. His choral works are particularly notable, and he is considered one of the leading choral composers of his generation. His compositions have been performed by numerous ensembles, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Pops, and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. One of Zaninelli's most famous works is his Requiem, which was composed in 1985. The piece is a setting of the traditional Latin Mass for the Dead and is scored for chorus, soloists, and orchestra. The Requiem has been performed by many choirs and orchestras around the world and has received critical acclaim for its beauty and emotional power. Another notable work by Zaninelli is his Symphony No. 3, which was composed in 1992. The piece is scored for orchestra and features three movements.
