Role:PerformerCharles Ossola was born on May 12, 1952, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a professional bassist and his mother a pianist. Ossola started playing the double bass at the age of 10 and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Ossola attended the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied under the renowned bassist Homer Mensch. He graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1974 and went on to pursue a career as a professional musician. In 1975, Ossola joined the New York Philharmonic as a bassist. He quickly established himself as one of the leading bassists in the orchestra and was praised for his technical skill and musicality. Ossola remained with the New York Philharmonic for over 40 years, becoming one of the longest-serving members of the orchestra. Throughout his career, Ossola has also been an active chamber musician and soloist. He has performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He has also collaborated with many of the world's leading conductors, including Leonard Bernstein, Zubin Mehta, and Lorin Maazel. One of the highlights of Ossola's career was his performance of the double bass concerto by Giovanni Bottesini with the New York Philharmonic in 1985. The performance was widely praised by critics and established Ossola as one of the leading soloists on the double bass. Ossola has also been recognized for his contributions to the field of classical music. In 2009, he was awarded the Richard J. Bogomolny National Service Award by the League of American Orchestras for his work as a mentor and educator. He has also been a faculty member at the Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music, where he has taught many of the leading bassists of the next generation. In addition to his work as a musician, Ossola has also been an advocate for the arts. He has served on the board of directors for the New York Philharmonic and has been a vocal supporter of music education programs in schools. Throughout his career, Ossola has remained dedicated to his craft and has continued to push the boundaries of what is possible on the double bass.
