He was the fourth of five children born to Daniel Peterson, a railway porter, and his wife Kathleen. Peterson's father was an amateur musician who played the violin and piano, and he encouraged his children to pursue music. Peterson began playing the piano at the age of five, and by the time he was seven, he was already performing in public. Peterson's early musical education was informal, and he learned to play by ear. He was influenced by the music of Nat King Cole, Art Tatum, and Teddy Wilson, and he began to develop his own style. In 1940, Peterson won a national radio competition called the "Amateur Hour," which led to his first professional engagement at the Alberta Lounge in Montreal. In 1945, Peterson formed a trio with guitarist Herb Ellis and bassist Ray Brown. The trio became one of the most popular jazz groups of the 1950s and 1960s, and they recorded numerous albums together. Peterson's virtuosic piano playing and innovative arrangements made him one of the most influential jazz musicians of his time. Peterson's compositions were characterized by their complex harmonies and intricate rhythms. He was known for his ability to blend different styles of music, including swing, bebop, and classical music. Some of his most famous compositions include "Hymn to Freedom," "Cakewalk," and "Canadiana Suite." Peterson was also a prolific performer, and he toured extensively throughout his career. He performed with some of the biggest names in jazz, including Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, and Louis Armstrong. He also performed with classical musicians, such as Itzhak Perlman and Yo-Yo Ma. In addition to his musical career, Peterson was also a philanthropist and educator. He established the Oscar Peterson Scholarship Fund to support young musicians, and he taught at several universities, including York University in Toronto. Peterson received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the Order of Canada, the highest civilian honor in Canada. He also received eight Grammy Awards and was inducted into the International Jazz Hall of Fame. Peterson continued to perform and record music until his death on December 23, 2007, at the age of 82. He left behind a legacy as one of the greatest jazz pianists and composers of all time.More....
