Her parents recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Marilyn attended the Juilliard School of Music in New York City, where she studied piano under the guidance of renowned pianist Rosina Lhévinne. She graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1955 and went on to pursue a Master of Music degree at the same institution. During her time at Juilliard, Marilyn also studied chamber music and participated in various ensembles. After completing her studies, Marilyn began her career as a concert pianist. She made her debut at Carnegie Hall in 1957, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Leonard Bernstein. The performance was a huge success, and Marilyn received critical acclaim for her virtuosic playing and musical interpretation. Over the years, Marilyn performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. In addition to her career as a soloist, Marilyn was also an accomplished chamber musician. She frequently performed with other musicians, including violinist Itzhak Perlman and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Together, they formed the Cooper-Perlman-Ma Trio, which was widely regarded as one of the finest chamber ensembles of its time. Throughout her career, Marilyn received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to the world of music. In 1962, she was awarded the Avery Fisher Prize, which is considered one of the most prestigious awards in classical music. She was also a recipient of the National Medal of Arts, which is the highest honor given to artists by the United States government. Marilyn continued to perform and record well into her later years.
