Quinteto Tango Nuevo is a classical music ensemble that specializes in the performance of tango music. The group was founded in 1999 by five musicians who shared a passion for the music of Astor Piazzolla, the Argentine composer who revolutionized the tango genre in the 20th century. The founding members of Quinteto Tango Nuevo were bandoneon player Héctor del Curto, pianist Gustavo Casenave, violinist Federico Britos Ruiz, guitarist Claudio Ragazzi, and bassist Pedro Giraudo. All of these musicians had extensive experience in the classical and jazz worlds, and they brought their diverse backgrounds to the interpretation of tango music. From the beginning, Quinteto Tango Nuevo aimed to create a new sound for tango music that would be faithful to its roots while also incorporating elements of jazz, classical music, and other genres. The group's repertoire included both original compositions and arrangements of classic tango pieces, all of which were infused with the group's unique style. One of the highlights of Quinteto Tango Nuevo's early career was their performance at the 2000 Montreal Jazz Festival. This was the group's first major international appearance, and it helped to establish their reputation as one of the most innovative and exciting tango ensembles of the time. Over the years, Quinteto Tango Nuevo has continued to perform at major festivals and concert halls around the world. They have collaborated with a wide range of musicians, including jazz pianist Chick Corea, classical guitarist Sharon Isbin, and the New York Philharmonic. In 2007, Quinteto Tango Nuevo released their debut album, "Misterioso," which was met with critical acclaim. The album featured original compositions by members of the group as well as arrangements of classic tango pieces. It showcased the group's virtuosity and their ability to create a new sound for tango music that was both innovative and respectful of tradition. In 2010, Quinteto Tango Nuevo released their second album, "Eternal Piazzolla," which was a tribute to the music of Astor Piazzolla. The album featured new arrangements of some of Piazzolla's most famous compositions, as well as original pieces inspired by his music. It was another critical success and helped to cement the group's reputation as one of the foremost interpreters of Piazzolla's music. In addition to their recordings, Quinteto Tango Nuevo has also been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 2003, they were awarded the Latin Grammy for Best Tango Album for their collaboration with Paquito D'Rivera, "The Jazz Chamber Trio." They have also been nominated for several other Latin Grammy awards, as well as a Grammy award for their album "Misterioso." Quinteto Tango Nuevo's members have also been recognized individually for their contributions to music. Héctor del Curto, for example, has been awarded the ACE Award for Best Bandoneon Player and the Latin Grammy for Best Tango Album as a solo artist. Gustavo Casenave has been recognized with the BMI Jazz Composers Award and the Latin Grammy for Best Classical Album. Despite their individual achievements, however, the members of Quinteto Tango Nuevo remain committed to the group and to their shared vision of creating a new sound for tango music. They continue to perform and record together, and their music continues to inspire audiences around the world.
