He was the son of a musician and grew up in a family of musicians. His father, Jan Hellinck, was a singer and composer, and his uncle, Jacobus Clemens non Papa, was also a well-known composer of the time. Lupus Hellinck was trained in music from a young age and showed great talent as a composer. Hellinck began his career as a singer in the choir of the Cathedral of St. Bavo in Ghent. He later became the choir director at the Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp, where he worked for many years. During this time, he also composed music for the church, including masses, motets, and hymns. One of Hellinck's most famous works is his Missa Surrexit Pastor Bonus, which was composed in 1540. This mass is known for its intricate polyphonic structure and its use of imitation between the different voices. It was widely performed throughout Europe during the Renaissance period and is still performed today. Hellinck was also known for his secular music, including chansons and madrigals. His chansons were often written in the French style and were popular in the courts of Europe. One of his most famous chansons is "Je suis deshéritée," which tells the story of a woman who has been abandoned by her lover. In addition to his work as a composer, Hellinck was also a respected music teacher. He taught many students, including his own son, who went on to become a successful composer in his own right. Hellinck died in Antwerp in 1541, leaving behind a legacy of beautiful music that continues to be performed and appreciated today.
