He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. His father was a pianist and his mother was a singer, so it was natural for Rian to develop an interest in music from a young age. Rian began playing the piano at the age of six and quickly showed a talent for the instrument. He studied at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam and later at the Juilliard School in New York City. He also studied with renowned pianists such as György Sebők and Leon Fleisher. In 1984, Rian won the prestigious International Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition in Rotterdam, which launched his career as a concert pianist. He went on to perform in major concert halls around the world, including the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Berlin Philharmonic, and Carnegie Hall in New York City. Rian was known for his interpretations of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Ludwig van Beethoven. He was also a champion of contemporary music and premiered works by Dutch composers such as Louis Andriessen and Theo Loevendie. One of Rian's most memorable performances was his 1995 recital at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, where he played Bach's Goldberg Variations. The performance was recorded and released on CD, which became a bestseller and earned critical acclaim. In addition to his solo career, Rian was also a sought-after chamber musician. He collaborated with many renowned musicians, including cellist Pieter Wispelwey and violinist Isabelle van Keulen. Rian was a dedicated teacher and taught at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam and the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln in Germany. He was known for his passionate and insightful teaching style and inspired many young pianists. Tragically, Rian's career was cut short when he was diagnosed with cancer in 2006. He continued to perform and teach despite his illness, but passed away on November 13, 2011, at the age of 53. Rian's legacy lives on through his recordings and the many pianists he inspired through his teaching. He was a true artist who dedicated his life to music and left a lasting impact on the classical music world.More....
